Mobile Phone
A mobile phone (American English/British English, literally "hand phone"; also called a cell phone) is a portable telephone. Most mobile phones in use today consist of two parts: a radio transceiver called the base station, and an electronic device that provides the user interface, called the handset. The handset is generally a handset phone, a pocket PC, a personal digital assistant (PDA), or some other portable consumer device. A typical modern mobile phone uses a signal from a cell site base station to allow it to send and receive calls and possibly data (either voice, or, in some cases, through the use of a data channel).
Terminology
The terms handset and cellular phone are commonly used in North America and Europe, while the terms mobile phone and cell phone are more commonly used in most of the rest of the world. In countries where the terms cell or mobile phone are widely used, a cellular telephone is not necessarily a mobile phone (as it may be fixed-based). However, the terms cell phone and mobile phone are often used interchangeably in the USA and Canada.
Cellular telephones
Cellular telephone technologies include analog systems (e.g., AMPS, GSM) and digital systems (e.g., CDMA, TDMA).
Cellular phone operators can provide services over a large geographic area with a fixed network (cellular network), using radio frequency channels. A cellular base station provides radio waves to the cell phones of its users, and can either be connected to a mobile switching center (for use in circuit-switched communication) or directly connected to a packet data serving node (PDSN). In the case of PDSNs, the network through which the service provider provides data service to its customers is the Internet.
When a mobile phone connects to a base station, it cannot be connected to any other base station without switching to a different channel. In the United States, base stations are designated in "cells" of varying sizes, in a manner which allows most mobile phones to communicate with each other. Smaller cells are used in cities; each cell covers a small area; larger cells are used in larger towns and metropolitan areas.
Therefore, a cellular network is inherently "cellular" because it relies on the use of transmitters (base stations) which cover a given geographic area, and are able to communicate with each other. However, unlike a regular, fixed network, this coverage is not fixed 0b46394aab
